Collaborative Sensemaking Support: Progressing from Portals and Tools to Collaboration Envelopes
نویسنده
چکیده
Sensemaking involves incomplete discovery, inaccurate interpretation, and imperfect action that will fail in someway and likely alter the situation in some unknowable way. Sensemaking demands intense, deep collaboration with participating agents, who many times are physically distributed and come from different groups and organizations. Incorporating collaboration functionality in a piece-meal approach in different ways as add-ons within a portal-based architecture can place heavy demands on users to learn, organizations to train, and ultimately limit the potential of collaboration technology to achieve organizational goals. It is proposed that individual and group sensemaking is a better starting point from which to build architectures to mitigate socio-cognitive limitations of participating agents collaborating to make sense of things. Three levels of Collaboration EnvelopesTM are presented and architectural considerations presented to guide development of technology to better support collaborative sensemaking. Co-OPR: Design and Evaluation of Collaborative Sensemaking and Planning Tools for Personnel Recovery
Personnel recovery teams must operate under intense pressure, taking into account not only hard logistics, but ‘messy’ factors such as the social or political implications of a decision. The Collaborative Operations for Personnel Recovery (Co-OPR) project has developed decision-support for sensemaking in such scenarios, seeking to exploit the complementary strengths of human and machine reasoni...
متن کاملArtifact Usefulness and Usage in Sensemaking Handoffs Authors
The complexities of sensemaking suggest that collaboration should be difficult, requiring a rich ecology of collaboration support. This can be a problem for handoff sensemaking, where one person must continue where another has left off, sometimes with only material artifacts as the basis of the handoff. A detailed analysis of essential attributes of sensemaking tasks, and elements identified in...

Soon, a new generation of scientific workbenches will be developed as a collaborative effort among various research institutions in the United States. These scientific workbenches will be accesses in the Web via portals. Reusable components are needed to build such portals for different scientific disciplines, allowing uniform desktop access to remote resources. Such components will include too...
متن کاملInterfaces for Collaborative Exploratory Web Search: Motivations and Directions for Multi-User Designs
In this position paper, we examine exploratory Web search as a collaborative activity and propose that such collaborations are commonplace. We present survey results that support this claim, and argue that current search interfaces provide limited support for common collaboration needs. We identify four features of the exploratory search experience (coverage, confidence, exposure, and productiv...

Current Web search tools, such as browsers and search engine sites, are designed for a single user, working alone. However, users frequently need to collaborate on information-finding tasks; for example, students often work together in groups on homework assignments. To address this need, we have prototyped and evaluated several collaborative web search tools (S 3 , SearchTogether, and CoSearch...
